At Habitat hw_rot_sh_jan13for Humanity, we build. We build because we believe that everyone, everywhere, should have a healthy, affordable place to call home. More than building homes, we build communities, we build hope and we build the opportunity for families to help themselves.

Habitat for Humanity depends on volunteers with a wide range of skills and interests. Volunteer efforts are invaluable behind the scenes on our various administrative committees, as well as in the field, contributing labor to construction projects. An experienced graphic designer might work with our publicity committe. A realtor or developer might help with site selection. A contractor might act as a foreman on an upcoming construction project. If you have minimal or no experience in a field or interest, that’s fine too.

HFHR is in need of help for the development of the following committees:

Construction Committee

Committee Purpose: The construction committee serves the vital purpose of leading the construction of Habitat for Humanity Homes. This committee handles land acquisition, permits, construction, and volunteer management.

 Is this committee for you?

The construction committee is made up of people skilled in the arts of carpentry, plumbing, electricity, and architecture.

This committee works to create a plan for a home that fits the specific needs of our selected partner families. This plan is then brought to life through the leadership and direction of committee members.

Habitat for Humanity volunteers are often unskilled in homebuilding, needing safety regulation education, and a lot of guidance. Our volunteers are part of what makes Habitat for Humanity such a unique organization. Anyone can help, regardless of experience or knowledge, all for the greater good of elimination of poverty housing.

Teaching these volunteers is an extremely rewarding aspect of getting involved with the construction committee. Paired along with bringing the dream of owning a decent house to life, for a family in need, being a part of this committee is a very fulfilling use of any skilled laborer’s spare time.

Habitat for Humanity homeowners only pay back the cost of the materials used to build the home, the labor is all done on a volunteer basis. This is why it is extremely important to have skilled and knowledgeable people to lead the construction of Habitat homes.

Ultimately that is what Habitat for Humanity is all about… People working together to provide families in need with a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.

Family Outreach Committee

Committee Purpose: The purpose of the Family Outreach Committee is to make recommendations of families for Habitat homes, and assist families through the application process. The selection and approval of the partner family is in the hands of this committee, making it a vital part of Habitat for Humanity.

This committee sets the tone for HFHR’s relationship with both partner families, and the community. This committee helps to educate the public on HFH’s services.

Is this committee for you?

The Family Outreach Committee interviews and documents contact with interested families. Members are responsible for educating families about Habitat for Humanity and assessing the family’s need for shelter, ability to pay, and willingness to partner with HFHR. Committee members will be responsible for keeping in touch with Habitat homeowners.

Committee Members will receive some training on financial review and the home interview process. Family Outreach Committee meetings are generally held monthly, and regular attendance is required.

The members should be aware of government programs and policies (such as the federal Fair Housing Act and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act), that affect the work of Habitat for Humanity.

The Family Outreach Committee, along with the board, will make the family selection decisions.

This committee provides families with the chance to work towards being a Habitat homeowner, and having a decent place to call home.

Fundraising Committee

Committee Purpose: The purpose of the Fundraising Committee is to create revenue for HFHR through running fundraising events and cultivating donors. As a non-profit organization, HFHR’s success depends entirely upon theprofit cultivated through fundraising efforts and donations, making this committee crucial to the growth of HFHR.

Is this committee for you?

This committee will be responsible for coming up with different ideas for fundraising events, planning, publicizing, and properly executing them. Members will have the opportunity to spread word of Habitat for Humanity’s mission and educate communities on the opportunities and programs HFHR has to offer. This committee will also be making connections with valuable individuals within the community who have the means to help grow HFHR’s funds.

Habitat for Humanity homeowners pay a mortgage worth only the cost of the materials used to build the house. This is why it is so crucial to have a committee dedicated to accumulating more funds, so HFHR can increase the number of projects and impact on the community.
